Laura Grave de Peralta

I am a researcher in mathematics. My main interests are geometric group theory, graph theory (and combinatorics in general) and their applications to other fields of science.

Besides research, I am passionate about outreach and science communication. Some information about that can also be found on the website of our association La matrice.

About

I'm am currently a Post-doctoral researcher in Mathematics at UC Louvain (Belgium), under the supervision of Timothée Marquis for the project "High dimensional expanders and Kac-Moody-Steinberg Groups".
I completed my PhD in Mathematics at the University of Neuchatel (Switzerland) under the supervision of Alexander Kolpakov

I am interested in graph theory (and combinatorics in general), group theory and geometry in general but also in applying my knowledge to other domains than mathematics. In particular, questions related to ecology and social sciences.

I have a passion for outreach and science popularization. I have participated in several outreach projects in Geneva, Neuchatel and now in Louvain-la-Neuve.

Research interests

My main research interest is combinatorics, in particular graph theory and the possible applications of such tools to diverse theoretical and more concrete problems. I did my PhD at the University of Neuchâtel under the supervision of Alexander Kolpakov.

On the theoretical side, I have worked on applications to combinatorial maps and subgroup growth as well as a combinatorial model for Teichmuller space. On the other side, I am interested on developping graph theoretic methods to better understand networks arising in real life (e.g. trophic networks, electrical networks and social networks).

Accepted publications

  1. Telescopic groups and symmetries of combinatorial maps . This is a joint work with R. Bottinelli and A. Kolpakov
  1. Some applications of combinatorics: from group theory to mathematical ecology. My PhD thesis defended at the University of Neuchâtel under the supervision of A. Kolpakov.

Preprints with preliminary titles (available upon request)

  1. Detecting keystone species from layered trophic network : presentation of a novel algorithm. (OSF preprint) In collaboration with M. Mulot
  2. Expansion properties of pants graphs of surfaces. (arXiv:2303.13923) In collaboration with A. Kolpakov.
  3. Subgroup enumeration and statistics of Hecke groups.

Outreach and Community work

I had the chance to discover what outreach and math popularization was during my bachelor degree. At that time, I worked part-time at the MathScope of the University of Geneva.

As a PhD student in Neuchatel, I launched "La caravane des maths". A roving math exhibit intended for classes in Canton Neuchatel (CH). This project was funded by the Swiss Mathematical Society and L'académie Suisse des Sciences Naturelles (ScNat).

I co-founded, with Adélie Garin and Jeanne Fernandez an association called La matrice.
A few projects we have with this association are :

  1. The Climathics Workshop
It took place from November 28 to December 3, 2022 at the SwissMAP research station in Les Diablerets. The aim of this workshop was to understand the approaches to climate change from a mathematical point of view, and to promote local collaboration in Switzerland/EU as well as inclusivity and non-hierarchical collaboration.
  2. The continuous training of the "Commission romande de Mathématiques"
It is a worshop intended for high-school teachers in mathematics in the french-speaking part of Switzerland. We will talk about how math can be related to socio-economical and ecological problems and how to integrate that into mathematics classes in high-school.
